Albertina McNeill

I was born and brought up in central London but moved to Greenford in Middlesex (London Borough of Ealing) in 1990. I have a Portuguese/Scottish/Irish background. My interests include crochet, quiltmaking, embroidery, lino printmaking, drawing, photography, local politics and the environment. And gardening (obviously!).

About ten years ago I had what would probably once have been called a "nervous breakdown". Although I was lucky enough not to become so ill that I needed hospitalisation I became much more aware of the stigma associated with mental illness. Now I consider myself to be partly disabled by anxiety, agoraphobia and what could be a mild form of Tourette Syndrome. I now hold down a part time job but hope to do something more challenging in the future.

My motivation for starting the campaign is a desire to reverse the trend to wipeout or build over gardens. It has come as shock to discover that the area of central London that I grew up in is now "greener" than the suburb I moved to.
