About '[URGENT] STOP Plutonium (MOX) Nuclear Power in Japan!'

Japan's first MOX (mixed plutonium uranium oxide) fuel power generation at Japanese commercial nuclear powr plants is to start on Dec. 2.

Over 460,000 signatures have been collected in Japan seeking a stop to Genkai’s Pluthermal program. But the plan is under way.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

How you can help

It hasn't decided yet where and how the spent MOX fuel, which takes 500 years to be cooled down, will be disposed. Using MOX fuel in a nuclear reactor designed for uranium fuel increases the risk and severity of possible nuclear accidents. KYUDEN is using MOX fuel with a higher concentration of plutonium (almost double) than that which has been used in other countries. Also there are some serious doubts that defective MOX fuel have been mixed into the fuel.

STATEMENT:

We strongly demand a stop to Pluthermal (MOX fuel) nuclear generation at Genkai until the following problems are solved:

1. Danger of the Pluthermal Project.
2. Serious concerns that a large percentage of the MOX fuel being used at Genkai is defective.
3. No legal grounds for the government’s criteria for MOX fuel assembly inspection.
4. No plan to deal with spent MOX fuel.
5. Pluthermal program moving forward when Japan’s nuclear fuel cycle has failed.

Cf. “Pluthermal” is a Japanese word, which combines “plu” of “plutonium” and "thermal" and means MOX (mixed plutonium uranium oxide) fuel use in thermal reactor.
