Sugimoku (Coccophora langsdorfii) at Kaminoseki

In the marine area of Tanoura, Kaminoseki Town, Yamaguchi Pref., Japan there is a flora of sugimoku (Coccophora langsdorfii), that is a rarity for the SetoInland Sea. It means the southern limit for this species of sea weed, which is commonly seen in the Sea of Japan. The area with sandy bottom of some two meters deep is planned by the Chugoku El. Pwr. to landfill for a new nuclear plant. The Yamaguchi Pref. gave approval to the landfilling work. And 111 inhabitants, as well as the sugimoku and other six species of living things, went to law for "right of nature" (04/12/2008).
