On 15/12/2009, the Chugoku El Pwr sued four protestors for prevention of landfiling work at Tanoura cove of Kaminoseki where they are planning to construct a nuclear power plant (see the previous blog). The electric company asked the people for compensation of some yen (436,000 dollars) for damage.
Can such a slapping suit prevent the inhabitants from protesting and push them along the road to reconciliation?
The inhabitants of Iwaishima island include an old woman saying the following words, without stopping her daily work:
"Some people living there (those who agreed to construction of the nuclear plant at Kaminoseki) got money as much as 12,000,000 yen per person, I hear. Any money you made with your own efforts remains at you so long, while the one you easily obtained leaves you soon. If there is a sea rich in fish, you are going to have enough money to eat."
