About the campaign

The good news is that climate friendly alternatives to HFC based refrigeration already exist, but many supermarkets are unwilling to make the investment urgently needed. The Environmental Investigation Agency carried out a survey assessing efforts made by supermarkets to adopt more climate friendly refrigeration. And the results were very disappointing.

The survey revealed that none of the supermarkets have more than a small handful of stores using climate-friendly alternatives. Marks and Spencer were clear leaders with the highest number of stores converted and a training programme for engineers working on alternatives. Way down at the bottom of the table were Iceland, not only did they refuse to participate but they also managed to score a negative point for going back on a promise made in 1999 to switch to climate friendly alternatives. For a full breakdown of the results have a look at www.chillingfacts.org.uk

There is a real need for greater public attention focused on the issue. That's why were asking for your help in telling the supermarkets to stop using HFCs and asking the government to make legislation against their use.
