To fight climate change everyone must take steps to reduce their impact on global warming. We can all play our part in decreasing our contribution of greenhouse gases.
Offsetting is an additional method of helping. As we rely on fossil fuels for energy (electricity, heating, transport etc) some greenhouse gas production cannot be avoided.
Carbon Offsetting balances unavoidable emissions with savings and reductions made elsewhere. Essentially, those who offset support a project to reduce a specific quantity of greenhouse gas in their name. These reductions are made by improving energy efficiency, introducing renewable energy or planting forests (carbon sequestration).
"Offsets" are measured in tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) equivalent, often abbreviated to "carbon". All six greenhouses gases are included in this measure based on their respective affect on climate change. For example 1 tonne of Nitrous Oxide is equivalent to 296 tonnes of CO2. Offsetting is embraced by groups as diverse as airlines, banks, pop stars, government ministers and the royal family.
