Save the Bechstein's bat

Bechstein`s bat is a rare native woodland bat. Very little is known about its distribution, making it difficult to focus conservation effort - until 1995,there were only 140 records. The Bat Conservation Trust has launched a project to improve knowledge of the Bechstein's population, which it hopes will help the rare creature hang on!

The Bat E-Bulletin

BAT E-BULLETIN
Issue 8: September 2007

The Bat e-Bulletin is a Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) initiative aimed at
providing a regular and up-to-date source of information on a wide range of
bat-related topics. Short news items in this bulletin are linked to more
detailed articles in PDF format on the BCT website. Future issues will
include something for everyone: research, mitigation, bat group news, bat
care, rabies, wind farms, licensing, training, biodiversity information and
links to other sites.

These are just a few ideas - we welcome thoughts and suggestions on future
articles, and most importantly, contributions!

* New book on European bats

A new book on European bats has recently been published. Handbuch der
Fledermäuse Europas und Nordwestafrikas Biologie, Kennzeichen, Gefährdung
by Christian Dietz, Otto von Helversen and Dietmar Nill, published by
Kosmos Verlag, covers all of the bat species found in Europe along with
species also found in north-west Africa. It includes recently described
species. Chapters cover general biology and ecology; there is also an
illustrated key to bats and individual species accounts. This 400-page book
is profusely illustrated with excellent photographs and maps; the text is
in German. This will certainly become a key reference for European bats.
