In the UK, the average family spends £470 a year on packaging and five million tonnes of it ends up being dumped in landfills. Products bought in supermarkets are the biggest contributor, with packaging from supermarket groceries accounting for 70% of the waste.

Despite all our efforts in recycling, the amount of domestic waste generated has gone up 20% over the last ten years, so excess packaging is firmly at the root of the problem. The need for flashy marketing is obviously wrapped around the issue since you do not die from eating food from markets or your local butcher.

As individuals, we can choose to buy larger quantities and products with less packaging. If you buy your food at local markets, you will not only reduce packaging but also cut down your food miles and CO2 emissions.

You can take action by contacting companies directly and ask them to reduce their amount of excess packaging and change to more environmentally friendly materials.

At the government level, it is time to apply legislative pressure and get tougher on existing regulation on packaging, which is far too weak. Over 90% of general landfill waste comes from the business sector, yet we, the public, are the only ones who are being encouraged to be responsible by reducing and recycling our waste.
